Best Food?

Dear LouLou

I know that there is no real answer to my question.  But the guys at the dog park are always talking about it.  What is the best dog food?  Dry/Wet?  Human food/dog food? Organic? I guess I’m not a gourmet like some of the dogs.  They act like that fussy cat on TV, Morris. I’m just happy if my kibble appears on time.  I can’t stand it when the humans forget my dinner time. Am I missing out by  not being pickier?

Dear Not Picky

Listen.  Humans like variety. Humans like to show off by spending money. Humans like to show off by being sophisticated and choosy (like that damned Morris). They do all that stuff to please themselves. Not to make you happy!   We dogs -as you point out- like food and like it on time.   This is not to say that some smells are really wonderful.  If the humans are passing around some nice steaks it can make a dog’s nose twitchy and head spin. That brings me to a word of caution: table scraps can be a great treat but not a great diet. Vet’s say that your food should be balanced and around 20% protein and probably a lot of spices, byproducts and chemicals aren’t good.   Of course, chocolate, grapes, raisins and macademia nuts are no-no’s for dogs.

But you know, N.P. you might just wake up some morning and say to yourself “ oh, not this again.”    Then take a cue for old Morris: turn up your nose and walk away.  Humans will get the message.
